Fishing
Although the beach itself is not always the best spot for fishing, Oxwich point and many of the surrounding coastal areas can be very good indeed. Oxwich Point can be reached by foot past Oxwich castle (Tudor fortified manor house) opposite Greenways Leisure Park and the footpaths heading over towards the point or alternatively you could go from the 6th Century Church of St. Illtyd down near the beach, however beware the large number of steps you must climb to get atop the point.
As mentioned Oxwich Bay has good boat access & launching facilities, however for those of you who do not own a boat all is not lost! Local company, Euphoria Sailing, offer sailing lessons, boat tours of Gower, kayaking lessons and hire at their Beach Club at Oxwich Bay & Swansea Marina.
Set in the heart of the Gower Peninsula at Parkmill, just west of Swansea, South Wales, the Gower Heritage Centre was established in 1990 as a countryside crafts centre situated in historical and beautiful surroundings. The 12th century water powered corn and saw mill was renovated, and experienced crafts people took up residence on site. Today the centre is recognised as a vibrant crafts and rural life museum that welcomes visitors from all around the world.
The location of Gower and its general aspect make it one of the best surf areas in the UK. The fact that it is a peninsula helps this and means that there are plenty of breaks to choose from depending upon the conditions.
The main factors when deciding where to go are 1). Swell size and direction, 2). Wind speed and direction, 3). Tide timetables and height of the tide. Llangennith faces directly out to the Atlantic and picks up swell before the other beaches. The prevailing wind direction for Gower is a westerly wind and this can push up the swell size. As a rough guide, Llangennith needs to be about 4-5ft for Langland and Caswell to get a 2-3ft wave.
If you are a new or inexperienced surfer then please do not go surfing alone and stick to the beach breaks on Gower. The Gower peninsula has many reef breaks but these are not recommended for the inexperienced.
Kiteboarding is a fast growing sport that is enjoyed by many people around the world and the essential skill is learning how to manage the power of a kite. Gower Kite Riders offer lessons in this up and coming sport.
